Liverpool to leave Melwood for Kirkby in training centre merger - source

Liverpool are planning to transform their Kirkby academy into a training facility for both the first-team and youth sides, a source has told ESPN FC.

The club have used Melwood as their first-team training base since the 1950s and it is located just over five miles away from Kirkby.

However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp first publicly suggested that Melwood and Kirkby may need to be brought closer together after a preseason friendly at Tranmere Rovers back in July -- the same day he penned a six-year contract extension at the club.

The source added that an announcement from Liverpool and Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council confirming the plans could be expected as early as Wednesday.
